Why does the packaging now say, “Keep Refrigerated At Home”?

The phrase “Keep Refrigerated at Home” has been added to clarify that crumpets should be stored in the refrigerator after purchase to maintain freshness and quality.

Is the Golden Crumpet range suitable for freezing?

The Golden Crumpet range is suitable for freezing for up to 2 months at or below -15oC. Once thawed, best consumed immediately.

What is the shelf life for the Golden Crumpet range?

You can find the “Use By Date” on the packaging.

Why are crumpets “Use by Date” and not “Best Before”?

Crumpets go through a very quick cooking process and have a high moisture content. This means they carry a slightly higher microbial risk than products such as bread, which are cooked for longer and at a sustained higher temperature. To ensure consumer safety, we therefore have a “USE BY” date on crumpets rather than a “BEST BEFORE” date.

What is NatureFlex™?

Golden has introduced a more sustainable packaging solution by replacing traditional plastic cellophane with NatureFlex™ – a home-compostable material made from renewable wood pulp.

This change has commenced with Golden Crumpet Rounds, & Golden Wholemeal Crumpet Rounds with plans to expand across the full crumpet range.

Why switch to NatureFlex™?

The switch to NatureFlex™ was made to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging.

Traditional cellophane packaging must be disposed of in landfill and can take decades to break down, whereas NatureFlex™ is home compostable, making it easy to dispose of in your home compost system, diverting plastic waste from landfill.

This move aligns with Golden’s sustainability goals and supports our brand commitment to environmental responsibility without compromising product quality.

Is the new packaging material better for the planet?

Yes. NatureFlex™ is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp and is certified to break down in home composting systems within 6–12 months*. It leaves no harmful residue and reduces the long-term waste and pollution caused by traditional plastic.

By using compostable materials landfill waste is reduced, supporting a more sustainable packaging solution.

*Varies depending on conditions

Is NatureFlex™ certified compostable?

Yes, NatureFlex™ is certified home compostable to international standards, including EN 13432 and AS 5810. It is designed to break down without leaving harmful residues.

Is NatureFlex™ safe to compost with food scraps and garden waste?

Yes, NatureFlex™ is safe to compost with food scraps and garden waste. It is certified for home composting and can be added to a compost bin along with materials such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, leaves, and garden clippings.

Do the Crumpets taste different in the new packaging?

No, there is no change to the recipe or taste of the crumpets. The switch to NatureFlex™ packaging supports sustainability goals without affecting product quality.

Why is NatureFlex™ packaging not used across all Golden Crumpets products yet?

NatureFlex™ has been introduced on select products, starting with Golden Crumpet Rounds & Golden Wholemeal Crumpet Rounds. The transition is being rolled out gradually to ensure packaging compatibility and maintain product quality across the full range.

How long will NatureFlex™ take to breakdown in my home compost?

As home composting systems vary significantly in their design, construction, and contents, so too does the effectiveness of the system to degrade materials. In an effective compost environment, NatureFlex™ can mostly degrade to particles less than 2mm within 6 months.

However, depending on many factors (e.g., temperature, moisture, oxygen level), this process can take up to 12 months. At this point, more than 90% of NatureFlex™ will be biodegraded by micro-organisms into carbon dioxide and organic material, in line with the Australian Home Compostability Standard AS5810.

Follow the composting tips found on our website: https://www.golden.com.au/sustainability

What should be done with NatureFlex™ packaging if home composting is not available?

NatureFlex™ packaging is designed for composting; however, if home composting is not available, disposal options will depend on local waste management services. In areas without access to suitable home composting facilities, NatureFlex™ packaging should be placed in the general waste bin.

While this does not take advantage of the material’s compostable properties, it ensures appropriate disposal.

Is the new packaging still tamper-evident?

Yes, NatureFlex™ packaging maintains tamper-evident features to ensure product safety and quality.
